Holy Wood (Palo Santo) – how do you use it and what is it for?

These sticks have a powerful purifying effect. Here I explain how, when, and why I use them.

Palo Santo is Spanish for "Holy Wood." These sticks come from a gnarled tree species native to Ecuador, called Bursera Graveolens. The wood has been used for centuries as incense in ceremonies and rituals. Because the tree species is endangered, we believe it's crucial that these sticks are sourced from brushwood and are also fair trade. The brushwood is aged for years until its distinctive aromatic scent is released.

Holy Wood (Palo Santo) is used by lighting it and letting it smoke. Most people find it very pleasant and powerful. It has a powerful purifying effect. You can use it to release and transform negative energy. Below are some examples of its uses.

General procedure:

Take a burning tea light or candle and keep it handy. Find an old bowl or dish that can handle some heat. Hold a stick of Palo Santo—Holy Wood—in the flame so it ignites. Keep the stick burning until it glows red. Then it's ready to use. You're using the smoke. After a while, the stick will stop smoking. Then, hold the stick in the flame again so it starts to smoke again. In between, you can tap the stick on the dish/bowl like a cigarette; this promotes the release of smoke. When you're finished using it, you can place the stick on the dish/bowl to let it cool safely. After this, you can reuse the stick (until it becomes so short that you can no longer hold it). Small stubs can also be smoldered as incense.

Cleansing your aura with Palo Santo - Sacred Wood:

Hold a smoking piece of wood and slowly move it through the aura to purify it. Some examples of applications:
• when you feel negative or heavy
• after systemic work
• in case of fatigue
• at an initiation
